When you’re after traditional Austrian fare in the heart of the Old Town, look no further than Altstadbeisl. From the first floor dining room you can gaze out the ancient windows towards wonderful closeup views of the Golden Roof and the beautiful surrounding Alstad buildings. Inside, the restaurant is modern yet characterful with timber beams, comfortable chairs and crisp white tablecloths. Altstadbeisl serves hearty, delicious Austrian classics including schnitzel, dumplings, spartzle and gröstl alongside potato salad and cabbage slaw. Don’t miss the rustic Tirol Gröstl with potato, onion, beef and bacon topped with a fried egg. Perfect with a stein of local beer to wash it down! Staff are friendly and helpful and for such a prime location, the prices are very fair.

Fischerhausl

Herrengasse 8, 6020 Innsbruck

Tucked away next to the Innsbruck Cathedral, Fischerhausl is a lovely, authentic Tyrolean restaurant and bar in a quiet nook of the Old Town. In a house built in 1753, the restaurant oozes character and charm with ancient timber floors, dark timber panelled walls with bench seats and red velvet cushions. The food served is hearty and tasty with many favourites including soups, ribs, goulash, schnitzel, spätzle and fish dishes. In the warmer months sit out in the cobblestoned beer garden and enjoy the peaceful, historic surrounds while you sip a refreshing Zillertal Bier.

Die Wilderin

Seilergasse 5, 6020 Innsbruck

Die Wilderin translates as “The Poacher” and that concept is at the heart of this restaurant. The chefs at Die Wilderin are passionate about serving regional, seasonal and sustainable food using the best fresh products available locally, often caught or foraged by themselves. Because of this philosophy, the menu changes frequently to make the most of what is available. Expect creative interpretations of Tyrolean classics including fish tartare, horse cooked two ways, roasted beef or duck and game dishes. The wine list features excellent Austrian wines by the glass which perfectly complement the dishes on offer. Staff are friendly and helpful, happy to translate the German menu for you and offer recommendations for what to try.

Lichblick

Maria-Theresien-Straße 18, 6020 Innsbruck

On the top floor of the flashy glass and steel Rathausgalerien shopping mall, you will find the stunning Lichblick restaurant. Literally meaning “Bright Spot”, Lichblick sits high above the Innsbruck Old Town and features floor to ceiling glass windows that allow light to stream in. The views from the restaurant are unparalleled, looking across the city rooftops and up towards the spectacular mountains beyond. As you might expect, the décor is contemporary, refined and minimalist – setting the scene for the food you’re about to receive. Dishes change seasonally and focus on fresh regional produce but expect options including: pink roasted saddle of veal with light lime aioli, rabbit pan roasted in a coat of bacon with mushrooms, anglerfish in a celery shell with crispy bacon and wild red prawns. There is an extensive wine list with a good selection of Austrian and other European wines. You can choose from three tasting menus or mix and match what you would like from the menu. A location like this doesn’t come cheap but for a special occasion you won’t be disappointed.
