Cafés

Coffee is as much a part of Italian life as breathing. Italians will pop into their local café several times a day for a pick-me-up, perhaps a cappuccino in the morning but mostly a quick espresso. Coffee quality in Florence, and throughout Italy, can be mixed, though thankfully the overall quality has been steadily improving over the past few years. The list of cafes below all serve up excellent coffee and often delicious pastries or small meals.

Note: In Italy if you sit at a table for coffee you will be charged table service prices, often more than double the standing price. Sometimes this is worth it, when you need a rest, want to take in a spectacular view or indulge in a spot of people watching. However, if you just want a quick caffeine hit, stand at the bar (with all the locals) and you will be charged the cheapest rate.

Also, in Italy you usually need to pay to use a public toilet. However, if you buy a coffee or other drink in a café you can use their restroom for free.
