Cafés
Barcelona has a burgeoning coffee scene and with several Barcelona-native roasters becoming world-famous in recent years it’s not hard to find a good cup of coffee. While most coffee shops will make you a cappuccino or flat white, also look out for the local favourites: Café amb llet (sp. Café con leche) which is half espresso, half hot milk; Tallat (sp. Cortado) which is espresso with a bit of milk; and Café sol (sp. Café solo) which is a shot of espresso.
Orval
Carrer de Buenaventura Muñoz, 31, 08018 Barcelona
Located in the Poblenou neighbourhood, not far from Ciutadella Park (and the Arc de Triomf) lies Orval, a coffee shop/nursery where you can enjoy a great cup of coffee and then browse a selection of beautiful plants for sale. Light, modern and split over two floors, Orval is a local’s haven and very popular for brunch and socialising. They use Nomad Coffee (some of the best in Barcelona) and have a great breakfast menu with delicious pastries and cakes to choose from. Orval is a little out of the centre of Barcelona but worth it to explore a new area and visit a unique café.
Caravelle
Carrer del Pintor Fortuny, 31, 08001 Barcelona
In the heart of hip El Ravel, Caravelle has one of the best brunches in Barcelona. From chia pudding and house-made granola to Caravelle eggs bennie (with pulled pork shoulder), Caravelle serves tasty food in a great atmosphere. And the coffee? They serve delicious Nomad coffee with milk sourced from a local farm 30km outside of Barcelona.
Ruma’s
Ronda de la Universidad, 10, Carrer dels Escudellers, 11, 08007 Barcelona
Right in the heart of Barcelona, just minutes from Plaça Catalunya, lies Ruma’s, a coffee lover’s dream. Serving a rotating range of different coffee beans, Ruma’s takes their coffee seriously but staff are friendly and the atmosphere is unpretentious. My tip – grab a flat white and some homemade chocolate to give you that energy boost you’ll need to make it through your day of sightseeing!
Satan’s Coffee Corner
Carrer de l’Arc de Sant Ramon del Call, 11, 08002 Barcelona
Back in the Gothic Quarter, Satan’s is a trendy café serving excellent coffee (by acclaimed roasters Right Side Coffee) and an interesting, mostly Japanese inspired menu. Modern interiors with huge windows looking out on the historic streets make for a great spot for a morning caffeine break. The baristas know their stuff here so feel free to ask what’s new or get some advice for that perfect cup.
Café’s El Magnifico
Carrer de l’Argenteria, 64, 08003 Barcelona
In the heart of the Gothic Quarter lies Café’s El Magnifico, a pioneer in the speciality coffee scene in Barcelona. Serving up a range of coffee beans from all over the world, staff here are passionate about coffee and it shows. They roast all the beans in-house and sell both beans and an incredible cup of coffee. There is not much space to sit but grab a takeaway and wander the delightful streets of El Born.
